You know how they say not to judge a book by its cover? I think in the case of Fated Blades by Ilona Andrews you absolutely can. Look at that cover – two kick-ass main characters, a bit of sci-fi, and delicious romantic tension. And the book itself delivers! If you’re looking for a quick, entertaining read, look no further than Fated Blades. You’ll get exactly what you paid for.
The Gist
Ilona Andrews, the famous wife-husband writing duo, has delighted audiences with the Kate Daniels series. The entire series is ten books and I think I finished it in a matter of weeks. The pacing was great, the characters intriguing, and the storylines creative and unique. I haven’t delved into the Kinsmen series but after reading Fated Blades I think I’m convinced to give it a try. The story is set on Rada, a planet colonized by a handful of ruling and competing families. The Adlers and the Baenas are rival families with some deep seated trust issues, but when betrayal strikes both families’ leaders, Ramona Adler and Matias Baena, will have to overcome their enmity and work together to save their planet.
You Can Fit Everything in a Small Package
You guys! This book is a novella and so quick to read. Sometimes it’s nice to pick up a book that’s not going to take you three weeks to finish. Every once in a while you just want a quick and dirty story. Fated Blades definitely was that for me.
I thought the book was fantastic. Even though the characters were enemies they worked so well together and quickly gathered on to the fact that they had each other’s backs. Additionally, the romantic chemistry was so tight! From the very beginning you could feel sparks (and weapons…) fly. I loved that both characters were strong leaders and had a take-no-prisoners mentality while still having room for compassion.
Lastly, the story itself was so good! In my opinion, sometimes a romance author loses the story and lets the romantic aspect carry the book. But Ilona Andrews is talented enough to expertly balance them both. While the characters are falling in love they’re also jumping out of spaceships and evading nuclear missiles. The action was fun and kept me turning the pages. And did I mention that chemistry?! The book just had the perfect amount of sizzle.
Side Note: I’m a big fan of Amazon Prime Unlimited because if I didn’t have it I’d spend way too much on books. If you have Prime Unlimited, this book is FREE! There is absolutely no reason you shouldn’t download this to your Kindle immediately.
Can I call in sick at work to read the Kinsmen series?
If you haven’t already guessed, I’m a big fan of Ilona Andrews and I thoroughly enjoyed their latest installment of the Kinsmen series. I enjoyed it so much I’m going to go read all of the other books in that universe. I can’t wait to get lost in that world again. If you like sci-fi books with straightforward characters, kick-ass action, and a sizzling romance, look no further than Fated Blades.
