Steamy hot cakes, Batman! From Blood and Ash by Jennifer Armentrout was not what I expected. After reading her Lux series, I just assumed this book was young adult but DON’T GO IN WITH THAT EXPECTATION! It was so smexy I think my Kindle melted! I felt like the smut was pretty well done though – just the right amount and no overly long sex scenes. At first, it felt a little immature but Armentrout found her groove towards the end.
The Gist
Now, let’s get on to the story. Poppy is the Maiden, a woman that speaks to no one, shows no one her face, and whose sole purpose is waiting for her Ascension. But Poppy has never fit the role of Maiden and her forbidden actions take her to Hawke, a golden-eyed, handsome guard. As they grow closer, he makes her question everything and when his true story comes out, she’ll have to choose between what she thought she knew and a future with Hawke.
Armentrout Got Her Groove On
The beginning starts off quickly but I felt like the story was a little immature. It definitely felt like I was reading a young adult book with the expected inexperienced heroine meeting the player hero. But like I said previously, by the end of the book Armentrout had found her groove and the story got smoother and more interesting. There were a few scenes at the end that made me dislike Hawke, but you’ll know what I mean when you get there. Sex should be completely consensual and you should 100% know who someone is in order to give consent, but I won’t stay on my soap box for long. Overall, I’m glad I read this story. It was fun and entertaining and definitely got my blood pumping. I was excited to read this book and it didn’t let me down.
