The Immortal Rules: Boom or Bust?

2.5/5

The Immortal Rules is the Friend that Eats All Your Queso

As a fan of Julie Kagawa’s Iron Fey series, I thought I was going to be best friends with The Immortal Rules. Unfortunately, I think we’re only “acquaintances-adjacent.” You know that friend of a friend that always comes over on game night, eats all of your queso, then proceeds to discuss how lame board games are? But you need them to come because who else is going to fill that last vacancy in Settlers of Catan? So you tolerate them for the good of all your guests but are always keeping your eyes open for a better player? You know who I’m talking about, right? That person IS this book – I tolerated it because I’m running low on things to read but I kept trying to find something better.

A Vampire Bust

Overall, I’m feeling like the book was a bust. And I wanted to like it SO much. Goodreads recommended the book to me (thanks Goodreads!) and it has a stellar 4.09 star rating out of +62,000 reviews, so it had to be good, right? But for me the story was flat and I wanted more from the world building and character development. I felt like I entered a story half-way through and I never quite got my bearings. There just wasn’t enough context built around these characters. Allison, our leading lady, was okay but Zeke, our leading man, was such a let down. He was just so one-dimensional and boring and the romance between the two never felt quite right. I might attempt the next book in the series but only if I’m really running low on things to read.s

“Eviction’s fallout is severe. Losing a home sends families to shelters, abandoned houses, and the street. It invites depression and illness, compels families to move into degrading housing in dangerous neighborhoods, uproots communities, and harms children. Eviction reveals people’s vulnerability and desperation, as well as their ingenuity and guts.” – Evicted by Matthew Desmond

Ok, this series was steamy with a capital “S” but it was also just a really solid vampire tale. If you don’t mind a bit of blood and guts thrown around and can get down with some vampires, then this book is 100% for you.
