As a Mexican American reader, I adore books written by hispanic authors. There’s always a touch of magical realism and an emphasis on the importance of food that warms my heart (and occasionally my belly). Being able to see yourself and connect with a character in a book let’s you get more invested in the story and feel like you’re recognized as a person.

Hollywood generally lets us down when it comes to book-to-movie adaptations. The acting is never that good or the movie leaves out two-thirds of the book (I’m looking at you Percy Jackson…). But some movies somehow really capture a book and it can be so magical! You get to see these characters that lived in your head come to life on screen with REAL people. How cool is that?!
My brother-in-law recently loaned me The Stand by Stephen King. It’s the extended version so a bit longer than I’d like (1141 pages…whew!) but I’m halfway through and loving it. In 2019, I had a crazy idea – read 100 books in a year. People all over the world undertake the 100 book challenge and I was finally ready to be one of them.
I’ve always been fascinated by World War II. Both my grandfather’s enlisted and fought in WWII and I have too many great uncles that didn’t make it home. For obvious reasons, my grandfathers never mentioned the war but I’ve always been fascinated with that time period. This list of books has helped me grasp a multi-faceted war filled with tragedy and unimaginable loss.
Untamed is not the only book out there that gives you that intense, empowered feeling. It’s not the only one that makes you want to get off the couch and do that thing you’ve always wanted. It might be one of the best but here’s a list of other books that will make you roar.
